Big Year for ISU Oil Recovery

Members of the International Salvage Union recovered some 875,000 tons of pollutants during salvage operations last year. Emergency assistance was provided worldwide for 247 vessels with cargoes and bunkers threatening pollution.

The results of the ISU's latest annual Pollution Prevention Survey shows that oils, chemicals, other pollutants and bunker fuel was up by over 19% last year despite a modest fall in the number of casualties attended.

ISU President Hans van Rooij said, 'Once again our members have demonstrated their effectiveness in defending the marine environment. In 2005, the recoveries included over half a million tons of crude oil.'

The ISU's Pollution Prevention Survey began in 1994. In the 12 years through 2005, ISU salvors recovered 12,617,837 tons of potential pollutants, including nearly 10m tons of crude oil and diesel.

The number of tanker salvage operations last year rose to 34 from 24 in 2004, with the largest single service provided for a crude carrier laden with 133,500 tons of oil. This rise was offset by a fall from 36 to 20 in the number of casualties requiring the ship to ship transfer of cargoes and/or bunkers.

The single most utilised from of contract last year was Lloyd's Form, used in over 30% of the total number of assistances.

The year saw 11 wreck removal operations, 27 common law salvage claims, and 84 services carried out on a lump sum daily hire basis.
