Zodiac Says YES to Yacht Evacuation

A new evacuation system is being promoted by International Safety Products Ltd (ISPL), the UK distributor for Zodiac. The YES (Yacht Evacuation System) features a container permanently installed on the yacht’s side at evacuation deck level which, when activated, inflates an escape slide and floating transfer platform. This eliminates the need for owners and crew to make long ladder descents into liferafts and enables the elderly or infirm to leave the vessel quickly in an emergency.
The Zodiac YES is authorised by the UK Maritme and Coastguard Agency under the Large Commercial Yacht Code for installations from 1.7 to 3.2m above the water line. It consists of a single stainless steel container that can be installed within the ship’s structure and can incorporate an outside panel that integrates it within the yacht’s exterior styling. It can be installed as a retrofit or specified during construction to provide an important enhancement to the yacht’s safety without impairing its aesthetic performance.
Installation of the Zodiac YES is achieved by fitting its base plate to the deck. The container measures just 1.349 by 0.956 by 0.316m, weighs 215 kg, and can be simply lifted off the base plate for servicing. The system is activated by pulling a firing strap which inflates the slide and the platform simultaneously. Two bowsing lines from the platform remain connected to cleats on the base plate and these make any appendages on the hull unnecessary. The system has been designed for use with the Zodiac XTREM range of liferafts and ISPL believes that it now provides yacht designers with the ideal solution to the problem of combining attractive styling with a practical means of evacuation for large yachts.
