Seatruck Christens First of Five
01 Nov 2006
Seatruck Ferries celebrated the christening of the first of five new ferries with champagne ceremonies for the ‘Clipper Point’ at Astilleros de Huelva in Spain last month. The building of sister vessel ‘Clipper Pace’ is already underway at the same yard.
When it enters service early next year, the Clipper Point will be by far the largest and most powerful vessel operating out of Heysham on the route to Warrenpoint in Northern Ireland. The new vessel will double the capacity of current Seatruck ferries, carrying over 120 units at a service speedof 22 knots to reduce crossing times from 9 hours to 6.5 hours.
To cope with the new vessel, Heysham Port is investing in new facilities, including a new double width ramp to permit more efficient vessel handling.
Seatruck CEO Kevin Hobbs says the company is currently investigating various deployment opportunities in European markets for the additional three vessels. He added, ‘These new vessels will transform the Seatruck service by providing a new level of capacity, speed and schedule reliability to the growing unaccompanied market. We are committed to making a major investment in new tonnage which will move traffic faster and more reliably on this key route. The company was established to meet the Irish Sea transportation needs of the haulage industry only ten years ago and has expanded successfully from one vessel with a low cost, freight only business model.
