Giant Fenders for RN Tugs
01 Oct 2006
Marine fenders come in many shapes and sizes but few are as large as those used by the UK Ministry of Defence on their service tugs. Measuring 26ft in length by 4ft in diameter and weighing more than 7 tons, the specialised rope and chain structures are integral to the safe berthing of some of the Royal Navy's most prestigious ships.
The fenders are manufactured at Devonport Naval Base in Plymouth by Global Defence Procurement (GDP), a newly acquired and autonomous trading division of lifting gear distributor Certex UK. GDP Specialises in the sales and servicing of a wide range of marine and industrial equipment to the MOD and its prime contractors, as well as to the commercial leisure and fishing industries.
Made exclusively by GDP at their naval base workshop, the fenders are constructed of woven fibre rope around a strong central chain support. they are then covered by layers of natural sisal rope matting stitched together by wire rope. This matting provides the soft surface necessary to prevent damage to either vessel as the tugs manoeuvre the ships around the harbour. The life expectancy of one of these fenders averages between 18 months and two years so there is a constant cycle of renewal and repair. As part of its agreement with Serco Denholm Ltd, who have a contract with the MOD to provide marine services at Devonport and the other naval bases, GDP also offers full equipment testing facilities and installation support.
Tim Clark, business development executive at GDP, explained how the system works. 'GDP provides a complete end to end service for these fenders, from the removal of the old fender to the fitting of the new one. We also offer regular inspections, which include checking for any damage or corrosion to the central chain core, and advice on repairing or replacing.'
As well as the manufacturing workshop, GDP facilities at Devonport include a fully MCA approved service station for life rafts, rescue boats and life jackets and a comprehensive rigging facility.
