Marina Surveyors Stick to RIBs

C & S Survey Solutions has successfully coupled the Ohmex range of echo sounders to the 1200 Series GPS System, and their existing range of robotic EDM's. The company has been equipped with Leica GPS and traditional surveying equipment for several years. It approached to complete surveys that would include the onsite bathymetric information in conjunction with the topographic data.
After considering existing systems and the cost involved to purchase and implement them, C & S decided to couple a suitable system to their existing Leica equipment range. Hampshire UK based Ohmex had a reasonably priced ‘off the shelf’ echo sounding system specifically designed for this type of small inshore bathymetric survey.
Nathan Ward of Leica Geosystems thoroughly investigated the streaming of data from the echo sounder to the GPS units and his knowledge and assistance was invaluable in the initial setting up of the working system.
The next decision was the type of vessel. After considering several types of craft, a decision was taken to use a 3.1m RIB which is easily launched and has a shallow draft of only 400mm utilizing a small outboard and electrical propulsion in areas where environmental considerations dictate.
Paramount to this decision was the handling capabilities of a small craft and the comfort of the surveyor, who would be working all day within marina, river and other inshore environments.
