Boskalis Acquires Large Contracts in Russia

Dutch dredging company Royal Boskalis Westminster has won two large contracts in Russia. In St Petersburg, Boskalis will dredge a new access channel from the sea. In Varandey, Boskalis is involved in the construction of two oil pipelines of 20km each in the Barents Sea. The total contract value of both projects amounts to some 75m.
The contract in St Petersburg will be executed for the Russian government and is part of a large flood protection project in St Petersburg. For this purpose a breakwater will be constructed as well as a new access channel to St Petersburg from the Gulf of Finland. The company's responsibilities in this project include dredging of the new access channel as well as the repositioning and deepening of a number of cables that cross the new channel.
Boskalis will deploy one mid-size and one large trailing suction hopper dredger for this job, as well as specialist equipment for the locally hard soil (backhoes).
The project will commence this month and will be completed by the end of November 2007, with a break during the winter.
The project in Varandey is part of the oil export activities of the Russian state oil company Lukoil. The two pipelines will transport oil from the shore to an oil terminal some 20km seaward, where tankers will come alongside to load the oil. The pipelines will be laid at a depth of up to 20m.
Boskalis will deploy its large trailing suction hopper Oranje for this job. The project will start this month and is due to be completed at the end of November 2006, when the Barents Sea will freeze over.
The projects are a milestone for Boskalis, which has not executed works of this size in Russia before.
