Propulsion Monitoring Gets Real Time Deal at SMM

California based real time marine information systems specialist MICAD Marine has announced a partnership with French propulsion systems specialist France Helices to offer vessel operators condition based monitoring on a new high performance surface drive system.

The new surface drive system utilises MICAD Marine's Real Time Monitoring System to continuously monitor the vibration, oil temperature and bearing temperature on board the vessel. These real time readings are then compared to the established set of indices, the Vessel Signature, to determine if an abnormal condition exists.

If an abnormal condition is present, the MICAD Marine System triggers an alarm to alert operators that corrective action is required. These condition based alarms help to ensure that maintenance is performed well in advance of a costly failure.

'Traditional maintenance typically results in unpredictable vessel reliability, said John Miele, director of sales for MICAD Marine. 'Condition based maintenance is a far more accurate indicator of maintenance issues than simple engine hours or on-site inspections.'

France Helices chairman Paul Bezzi, founded the company in 1977 and has grown it to now include three production facilities across France which make not only propulsion systems but also some 30,000 propellers per year, oil lubricated shaft lines, bearings, brackets, nozzles, rudder arms and exhausts.

Voicing his satisfaction with the new MICAD Marine arrangement, he said, 'Our partnership will provide vessel operators with the most advanced propulsion and monitoring technology on the market today.'
