Belgians Flourish in South America

Belgium's Jan De Nul Group, together with SAIPEM and Constructoro Norberto Odebrecht, won a contract last month from Peru LNG to build marine export facilities at the Pampa Melchorita LNG facility, located some 200km south of Lima. The total contract is valued at $247m, with Jan De Nul taking a 20% portion.

The 40 month contract consists of the engineering, procurement and construction of a 1,350m approach trestle, LNG ship loading facilities comprising an LNG platform and dolphins, an approach channel and an 800m offshore breakwater. Some 11,500 tons of piles will be installed, 6,000 tons of steel structure will be erected, more than 2.5m tons of rock will be placed offshore and 3.6m m 3of dredged material will be moved.

Peru LNG is a Peruvian registered company created in 2003 for the purpose of developing a natural gas liquefaction facility utilising the excess supply of Peru's abundant gas reserves.

Jan De Nul has also boosted its activities in Uruguay with the award of a contract for dredging and reclamation works for the expansion of the container terminal 'Terminal Cuenca de la Plata' (TCP) in Montevideo.

Already this year Jan De Nul has been dredging the access channel to the port of Montevideo to a depth of 11.5m. With that contract now coming to an end, JDN has obtained this follow on contract from TCP's operator, whose principal shareholder is Belgium's Katoennatie.

The works consist of dredging a trench in the quay area, where soft soil will be removed and replaced by sand, plus the reclamation of a container stacking area after soil replacement has taken place.

The works will start towards the end of this year and will take 14 months to complete. They will be executed by the trailing suction hopper dredger James Ensor, which is currently working in neighbouring Argentina.
