Ship to Shore Cranes in Demand

Crane manufacturer Kalmar has won orders for two new super post-Panamax ship to shore cranes for MSC Home Terminal in Antwerp, on top of 15 cranes it supplied to the same port in 2004. Another order for a ship to shore container crane for Sweden's Helsingborgs Hamn AB will be the second largest crane working in a Swedish port.

The MSC cranes will lift 80 tons on the ropes, with an outreach of 56m while the Helsingborgs Hamn crane will hoist 82 tons, with an outreach of 37m. Delivery of the cranes to Antwerp is scheduled for the end of June 2007 while the Swedish crane will be up and running by December of that same year.

The heavy duty Helsingborgs Hamn crane will handle post-Panamax boxships in single or twinlift mode. It is designed for the existing terminal in Helsingborgs, which has a total quay length of some250m.

The requirement for twinlift capabilities and a working load of 80 tons while complying with the limited permissible rail loads on the quayside called for a semi-rope trolley system. The Kalmar design allows for higher working loads with a limited wheel load.

The design of the crane is based on Kalmar's experience of the single box girder, semi-rope trolley concept, adapted to incorporate the latest twinlift container handling technology.

The crane will also be supplied with the latest electronic anti-sway system, including semi-automatic features and will be accessible from Kalmar's Remote Machine Interface (RMI) monitoring and maintenance system.
