Hydrographic Survey by David Goodfellow

BSH Digitises its Library of Nautical Material

Germany’s Shipping & Hydrographic Agency, BSH, is planning to digitise its entire library of nautical material in what it says will be the world’s first system of its type, one which will later be adopted by other hydrographic offices.

All navigational charts and nautical books, both printed and digital, will be generated from a single database.

The Agency, which has over 900 employees and an annual budget of €60m, has also announced its intention to completely re-survey the Kadet Channel in northern Germany which it says was last charted ten years ago but has since become a bottleneck to navigation in the Baltic Sea.  For the North Sea sector, all main fairways will be re-surveyed in collaboration with other regional states while the first areas scheduled for coverage are the approaches to the rivers Elbe and Weser.
