Dutch Heavy Lift Operator Dockwise Sold for $700m
01 Jan 2007
International private equity and funds manager 3i has agreed to buy Dutch marine heavy lift operators Dockwise Transport BV from Dutch offshore services company Heerema Group and Norwegian maritime group Wilh. Wilhelmsen in a deal valued at over $700m.
Dockwise is a world wide market specialist in heavy lift transportation for the marine and oil and gas industries, operating a fleet of 15 semi-submersible vessels from its headquarters in Breda. Two dock-type vessels are used primarily for transporting port and industry related cargo.
3i will retain the incumbent management team, led by CEO Andre Goedee, who summarised he deal by saying, ‘This is an exciting time for Dockwise. The Heerema Group and the Wilhlmsen Group have been strong shareholders in he company and 3i is well placed to take the reigns and continue supporting our strategy for continued growth and development.’
Announcement of the deal came shortly after the Dockwise semi-submersible Mighty Servant 3 developed a list and sank in 62m of water after unloading a drilling platform off the coast of North Angola near the entrance of the Port of Luanda. The drilling platform did not sustain any damage. All of Mighty Servant 3’s 21 man crew were taken safely off the sinking vessel by another craft supporting the offloading operation. The cause of the sinking is under investigation.
