Osprey’s Innovation Expedites Crane Delivery

Southampton UK based specialist project managers and marine engineers Osprey Shipping have been employed by crane manufacturer Stothert & Pitt, part of the international Clarke Chapman group, to supply a turnkey solution for the delivery of a new dockside crane for the UK Ministry of Defence’s Ernesettle Ammunition berth in Plymouth.

There was no suitable road access to the remote berth and there were also height restrictions preventing a geared ship from passing under bridges along the route. The Osprey Warrior barge was thus converted into a floating crane barge by the simple expedient of driving a 1,200 ton crawler crane onto the deck.

Osprey Shipping’s Newcastle office supplied special haulage for three abnormal loads from the factory in Gateshead, supervised loading at a berth on the Tyne, completed the ballasting operations, provided all stability calculations and installed sea fastenings on the barge prior to sailing.

A successful three day tow was undertaken by the tug ‘Cumbrae’ to Plymouth, where the crane equipped Osprey Warrior discharged its cargo in the correct sequence for final assembly. Osprey Shipping was also able to provide marine insurance to cover the operation.
