Dredging International to Deepen Access to Bulgarian Port
01 Jan 2007
Belgian contractor Dredging International has signed a €30m contract for the expansion and deepening of the access channels to Port of Bourgas, the second biggest port in Bulgaria. In a statement, Dredging International said the contract was awarded after ‘very stiff competition’ from two other groups. Work on site was scheduled to start by the end of 2006.
Dredging International has recently secured several contracts in East European markets. The company has already announced a number of export successes in Russia, and noted that since Bulgaria is scheduled to join the EU this month, a significant increase in maritime traffic to and from the Black Sea ports is to be expected. In view of this development, Bourgas is being extended with new quay walls and is being deepened.
Dredging International will dredge, broaden and deepen the 12km long fairway serving the port to a depth of minus 15.78m (currently 11m). Work is due to be completed within a year. A total of 4 million m³ will be dredged, including some 300,000m³ using bucket dredge or backhoe and 3.7 million m³ with a trailing suction hopper dredger.
The dredged material will be dumped in a specific area, 30km from Bourgas, designated by the Bulgarian government.
