Tangier’s New Transhipment Port Nears Completion

UK consultancy Royal Haskoning which has played a key role in the development of Morocco’s Tanger-Med port, currently under construction and due to begin operations in 2007, has provided an update on the company’s role in the project. The £1.3 billion project is located on the Strait of Gibraltar, 15km from mainland Europe and 35km from Tangiers, and will play an important role in the world’s container traffic network.

As well as two container terminals, the port will host passenger and general cargo facilities. It also aims to become a vital hub for cereal transhipment, for which there are currently no facilities in north-west Africa.

The concession for the port’s first container terminal has been won by a consortium of APM Terminals and AKWA Group, who were selected by Tangier Mediterranean Special Agency.  Royal Haskoning is providing civil engineering on the project and advised during the concession bidding process, and subsequently prepared the tender package for the landside works for the terminal. These works include heavy duty paving, a gatehouse, administration building, workshop, diesel filling station and crane rails, and services including fire fighting systems, electrical, lighting and water services. The terminal covers 40 hectares with 800m of quay wall.

The contract was awarded in April to EGS, a consortium of Moroccan contractors, and Royal Haskoning is currently supervising the construction, with the terminal currently due for completion in the third quarter of 2007.
