    'White Knight'Buys GL

    hamburg based classification society Germanischer Lloyd has been rescued from the hostile takeover advances of French rival Bureau Veritas by local tycoon Gunter Herz, who has now acquired over 95% of GL's shares.  

  • Wartsila Buys Schiffko

    The Wartsila Corporation completed the acquisition of German ship design company Schiffko shortly after Christmas.  Shiffko specialises in the planning and design of ships, specialising in the container, research and offshore vessel market sectors.  It also provides consultancy and project management services for ship owners and shipbuilders.  

  • Kalmar Buys a Ferrari

    Global handling equipment provider Kalmar Industries has acquired Italy's CVS Ferrari Group, strengthening its market position and service capabilities in Southern Europe and other Mediterranean markets.

    The movement of organisms via the transport of water from one ecosystem to another can lead to serious ecological, health and financial consequences in the host environment.   

  • Students Lay Up Skills for the Future

    Over 400 children aged thirteen and fourteen from fifteen schools on the Isle of Wight took part in a project last month to study boat design and create their own catamaran. The aim of the project was to introduce glass fibre and all its properties to young people using a hands-on approach.  

  • IMCA's Norwegian Head

    It its biennial board changes, the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has appointed its first ever Norwegian president.  Knut Boe, senior executive vice president for marine operations and technical resources in Technip's offshore branch, also becomes chairman of the IMCA's Overall Management Committee (OMC).  

  • James Fisher Buys Everard

    James Fisher created the largest UK owned shipping and marine services group last month with the £350m purchase of rival product tanker operator FT Everard.  

  • Torque Talk Returns

    The second conference on The Science of Making Torque from Wind has been scheduled for 28 to 31 August at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) at Lyngby, 10 miles north of Copenhagen.  

  • Mustang’s Match with Incat Crowther

    Mustang Marine (Wales) Ltd has signed a cooperation agreement with Australian design house Incat Crowther which gives the Pembroke Dock based boat builders exclusive rights to build Incat Crowther designs for customers in the UK and Ireland. Mustang Marine anticipates that the demand will be for workboats and ferries in aluminium and steel.  

  • 'Arrow' Flies to Falmouth

    The second VT Halmatic 16m pilot boat was named ‘Arrow’ and entered service in ceremonies conducted at the Port of Falmouth last month. Arrow is the second of two new Camarc designed boats ordered by Falmouth Harbour Commissioners and PD Ports. Sister ship Greatham entered service recently at Teesport (see MJ, NOV 2006).   

  • Hazardous Waste Website

    With the current regulatory climate creating a financial and manpower burden to UK businesses, a new website launched this month aims to help small and medium sized businesses comply with waste legislation.  The website, www.BeCompliant.co.uk, provides applications and tools to help producers of hazardous waste meet compliance criteria, save money and avoid environmental incidents and fines.

    Germany's RENK AG has indicated its intention to take over MAAG Gear AG of Winterthur in Switzerland.  MAAG makes turbo and marine gears.   

  • Conservancy Fights ‘Flawed’ Coastal Strategy

    The Chichester Harbour Conservancy, statutory harbour authority for Chichester Harbour in the UK, has expressed disappointment at the draft Coastal Defence Strategy drawn up by the UK Environment Agency. It will determine how East Head, the sand dunes at the Harbour Entrance, will be managed in the future.   

  • Wharf Comes Back to Life

    A Thames cargo wharf in East London was brought back into working use this month after being unused for over a decade. The visit of the cargo ship ‘Wiebke D’ to Alexander Wharf in Barking is the first use of the port facility since 1996.
