'Arrow' Flies to Falmouth

The second VT Halmatic 16m pilot boat was named ‘Arrow’ and entered service in ceremonies conducted at the Port of Falmouth last month. Arrow is the second of two new Camarc designed boats ordered by Falmouth Harbour Commissioners and PD Ports. Sister ship Greatham entered service recently at Teesport (see MJ, NOV 2006).

The vessel design is based on Teesport’s existing 16m pilot boat Coatham. Following a competitive tender, Falmouth Harbour Commissioners and PD Ports both ordered identical boats from VT Halmatic.

Like Greatham, Arrow is classed Lloyds +A1 SSC Mono Pilot HSC G3. Two Scania DI 16M EMS diesels rated at 570mhp will take the craft to 23 knots with a full load of three crew and seven pilots or 12 passengers.

Mark Killingback, Deputy Harbour Master at Falmouth said, ‘The purchase of the new VT Halmatic Camarc 16 pilot boat will enhance the capability of the pilotage service that Falmouth offers and is an excellent example of how the port authorities can cooperate together in the specification and procurement of new pilot boats.’

Formed in 1870, Falmouth Harbour Commissioners provide pilotage services for the Ports of Falmouth, Falmouth Docks and Truro as well as the Helford River, the quarries on the eastern sie of the Lizard Peninsula and the Falmouth, Gerrans and Veryan Bays.
