Fuel Efficiency for Ferry Fleet

With financial pressures due to the rising cost of fuel effecting all transportation fleets, the requirement for ship owners and operators to professionally monitor their fuel usage in real time has become paramount.

Kort Propulsion has supplied the Micad Marine fuel monitoring system to Condor Ferries for retrofitting onto their cross-channel vessels ‘Condor Express’ and ‘Condor Vitesse’.

The system uses precise fuel flow meters and tachograph sensors from which information can be transmitted to both the bridge and a shore based pc in real time. The Micad system will also accommodate connections from the GPS, plotter, radar, and most other on board electronic systems on. It is now possible for the ship owner to view from his desk, in real time, a ship’s position, heading, engine speed and fuel burn rates, all whilst the ship is in transit anywhere in the world. In installations where there are data transfer links, the data uploaded via the Micad system is stored in data files for up to 10 years.

The system can all be operated by touch screen monitor and also has a wireless mini-mouse and keyboard as control options. Other control panel usages are easily added to the Micad system and can thus eliminate oversized control panels which take up valuable space.

The Micad screen shows the engine rpm against burn rates and is fully programmable to enable precise predictive fuel forecasting and costing, including journey detours, weather, and sea states. For the Condor Ferries vessels, the information is shown on easily viewable bar graphs. The presentation of information can be configured to suit the operator and is fully customisable at the time of ordering.
