The team of nine are now ready for the start of the new sailing season.

Over 10,000 boats use Chichester Harbour making it one of the busiest sailing areas on the South Coast. The Harbour Patrol team maintain a high level presence on the water throughout the season. They are available to help out wherever they are needed. On summer weekends they will be afloat for more than 10 hours a day.

Patrol officer Roger Young said, ‘Last year we assisted over 300 people on the water. The incidents ranged from medical emergencies to giving a tow to broken down vessels. We also helped rescue a porpoise that had got itself into trouble. This season we have a strong team who are all looking forward to getting out on the water.’

The team this year includes three permanent members of staff along with six seasonal team members. During the induction week they received training in first aid, boat handling skills and harbour by-laws.

To ensure safety on the water, the team have also been trained in the use of radar speed guns. Last season saw fines in excess of £500 handed out by magistrates for speeding offences. The Patrol will be working closely with all mariners to ensure a safe and happy season for all.
