European Skies Clear with John Deere

John Deere Power Systems has progressed well beyond the limitation of early associations with American tractors and is now placing ever more marine engines on European workboats.

The most recent example is the Eurocarrier 2209 ‘Willendeavour’, delivered by Neptune Marine Service bv of Aalst in the Netherlands for Williams Shipping Marine Ltd of Southampton UK.

The multi-cat style vessel’s engine room is equipped with keel cooled 68Kw John Deere 4045TF258 generator and a radiator cooled version of the same genset rated at 75Kw.

UK distributor and Seawork exhibitor E.P. Barrus Ltd has been supplying many John Deere propulsion engines for newbuilds as well as repowering. A recent example is the John Deere PowerTech 6081AFM which has repowered ‘Petroc’, the dedicated 15m dredger for Parkstone Bay Marina in Poole Harbour UK. The six cylinder, 8.1 litre, 375hp aftercooled marine diesel provides the reliability and high torque the single screw vessel requires to operate in often confined areas and rough conditions.

John Deere is one of the first marine engine manufacturers to offer a full line of diesel engines which complies with the various emissions requirements in force in Europe and America. Their range of four and six cylinder engines, ranging in size from 4.5 to 12.5 litres and delivering 80 to 526hp, all meet the Recreational Craft Directive which came into effect last year, the Inland Waterway Vessels Directive which will enter into force this year for inland navigation in Europe, and EPA Tier 2 for North American waters. The engine line up has won certification from DNV, ABS and CCS.

The range starts with the 80hp 4045DFM atmospheric marine diesel with mechanically controlled fuel injection and extends upwards to the 6125AFM turbocharged marine diesel, which is available in ratings of 341 to 526hp and features charge air cooling and electronic control. With submersible or integrated intercoolers, the engines all produce high torque at low RPM and thus reduced fuel consumption.
