The Show Must Go On On Board

Worboats perform any number of roles but there can be few more unusual than that of ‘Amara Zee’, which is used as the performing platform for the Caravan Stage Company Tall Ship Theatre.

The 90ft shallow draft flat bottomed sailing ship was custom designed and built as a touring venue for staging original contemporary theatre and dance shows on the deck, in the rigging, on the water and on the shore surrounding the audience.

The vessel is currently docked in Rotterdam and tours waterfront locations in Holland, Eastern England and Scotland.

Spending so much of its time in shallow water, Amara Zee’s engine is especially vulnerable to sediment, algae, rust and dust. Parker 500 series turbine filters from the Hydraulic Filtration Division of Parker Hannifin have thus been fitted to the engine to clean the fuel and remove any water while filtering out a minimum of 25% of contaminants. The Aquabloc filter elements use a specially treated semi-synthetic filter media to ensure optimum filtration and water separation performance.

The turbine filters also allow the engineer to switch to a fresh filter while the engine is still running, postponing a shutdown and filter change while at sea. An advanced, patent pending fuel shut-off valve keeps unfiltered fuel from entering clean-side passages during element removal and prevents trapped air from circulating through the fuel system.

The valve is automatically activated by inserting or removing the replacement and as the element is inserted into the assembly, the valve opens and allows only clean fuel to pass through to the engine. If the element is removed, the valve closes and stops all fuel flow out of the assembly, preventing any contamination from entering the system.
