Dubai Award for Van Oord

Dutch dredging and marine construction contractor Van Oord has been awarded a contract for the re-design of Dubai Promenade.

The total contract value is €14m and the client is Nakheel. Execution of the project has already started, with completion scheduled for February 2008.

The project consists of the removal of two existing breakwaters and construction of two new ones, construction of an underwater , and beach reclamation for the development of a new seven star hotel.

In total some 750,000 tons of rock will be placed and 650,000m3 of sand will be reclaimed.

Van Oord will deploy a trailing suction hopper dredger, a cutter suction dredger and a grab dredger.

Van Oord has also signed two contracts with the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management to execute beach replenishment works on the Dutch coast. The projects include the largest ever beach replenishment project in the country. The contracts have a total value of some €26m. Execution of the projects has already started and will be completed in December, with Van Oord deploying five trailing suction hopper dredgers to carry out the work.

The first project is for replenishment work on the coast of the island of Ameland. A total of 1,400,000m3 of sand will be required for foreshore nourishment and about 400,000m3 will be deposited on the beach.

The second project is for replenishment work on the shores of the province of North Holland and the Den Helder beach. These works include a foreshore replenishment of 4,000,000m3, a trench slope reconstruction of 1,800,000m3 and 1,500,000m3 of beach replenishment.
