New Autopilot Provides Safer Navigation

As the successor to AP9 and the natural evolution of the AP50, the New Simrad AP50+, launched in June at Nor-Shipping 2007, provides vast improvements in auto-steering performance, functionality and flexibility.

Like the AP50 before it, the AP50+ is designed to ensure professional vessels such as workboats, trawlers, ferries and cargo ships benefit from precise, efficient steering and safe navigation.

A key element of the AP50+ is the vastly improved integration of sensors and even greater flexibility in installation since adjustments may now be done in software in the control unit instead of in various boxes around the vessel. The system can now integrate with most any magnetic and gyrocompass, steering gear and navigation solutions.
‘We have opened the AP50 up to enable much greater flexibility in input received from sensors and indeed output, both in terms of control interface and alarms, and steering gear compatibility’, said Simrad product line director Tim Ryder. ‘This makes the AP50+ ideal for both newbuild and retrofit vessels to a very favourable price.’
The AP50+ provides highly accurate operation and precise course keeping, whatever the application. Steering accuracy is increased further through the straightforward ability to set and fine tune parameters individually. The unit actually learns how the rudder responds and pro-actively adapts to ensure that it is positioned exactly as required, eliminating rudder overshoot. The system also compensates for wear in the steering gear, which is especially important for retrofit vessels. It also has a unique built in adaptive adjustment to steering gear dead band that adjusts itself through the vessel’s lifetime.
With the flexible installation and interfacing abilities inherent in the AP50+, it is possible to integrate a combination of steering levers, rudder angle indicators and gyro repeaters to form a complete, integrated steering station at the bridge or helm of any vessel.
The AP50+ is compatible with Simrad professional autopilot accessories including the AP51 portable remote and the recently launched QS50 QuickStick, which enables full control of major autopilot functions without the need to reach for the main control. Thruster control is also available as an option.
Like the AP50, the new AP50+ is designed to make navigation and work at sea safer and more efficient. An improved Simrad WORK mode enables the autopilot to be programmed for different scenarios and applications, such as trawling, towing, being towed, trolling on one engine or manoeuvring at low speeds.
