Pedal Powered ‘SeaBomb’ Crosses the Ocean
01 Aug 2007
SeaBomb was shipped to the USA where it participated in the 9th International Submarine Races, held in June at the Naval Surface Warfare Center's Carderock Division in Bethesda, Maryland.
Believed to be the fastest of its type in the world, the SeaBomb took second place for 'top speed by a non-propeller driven one man sub'; came third in the innovation category and achieved an honorable mention for overall performance.
UK independent freight forwarders Woodland International Transport sponsored the team of engineering undergraduates by shipping their pedal powered submarine to and from the United States. Woodland used its experience in trans-Atlantic expedited airfreight services to ship the sub by air from London Heathrow to Washington DC in the USA, ensuring that the sub was ready for entry into the competition. Conventional ocean freight, in which Woodland also has expertise, was used to return the sub to the UK.
Woodland group directorJohn Stubbings said, ‘As an innovative member of the logistics industry, we were pleased to support the Bath students as they pitted their engineering talents against 22 other teams in an event which saw a new world speed record set.’
Team member William Megill added, ‘Without Woodland's support, we would have been unable to participate in an event that has traditionally been dominated by entries from North America. We are very grateful indeed.’
