To Russia with the IHMA

St Petersburg in Russia has been announced as the setting for 2008 Congress of the International Harbour Masters' Association (IHMA). Hosted by the St Petersburg Maritime Port Administration with the support of the Russian Ministry of Transport, the event will take place next year on 12-16 May.
Soon to celebrate its 300th anniversary, the 'Venice of the North' has a rich naval history as well beautiful cathedrals, museums and monuments to serve as backdrop for this 6th biennial IHMA Congress. It provides an occasion for Harbour Masters from around the world to come together for a high quality programme, to meet old friends and to engage in networking opportunities.
The five day Congress incorporates a full programme of papers, an exhibition, an optional workshop, technical visits and a partner programme as well as the biennial OGM for IHMA members. Special rates have been negotiated for the benefit of delegates at the Corinthia Nevskij Palace Hotel.
The main business of the programme takes place in the Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace. An outline programme of papers is already in place, with the theme for 2008 being 'Ports of the Future - Meeting the Challenge'. As in previous years, speakers will comprise senior figures from all sections of the industry. An exhibition has also become an integral component of the Congress.
A popular feature inaugurated at the Malta Congress, the workshop or 'themed working groups' takes place on the afternoon of 15 May at the Corinthia Nevskij Palace Hotel, with the topic being 'Training and development of future Harbour Masters'.
Delegates are also taken to designated locations for the hands on experience of a technical visit. The options and programme for thee visits is due to be announced soon.
There is also a programme of social event, including the Welcome Reception and Congress Dinner which accompanying partners can also attend as ell as opportunities to visit St Petersburg's many attractions, including the famous Hermitage Museum and Winter Palace.
