Newport Unlimited Secures Marina Study

Urban regeneration company Newport Unlimited has secured £75,000 funding from the Welsh Assembly to consider the possibility of a developing a marina in Crindau.

According to a statement issued by the company, Newport Unlimited has appointed Hyder Consulting to conduct the marina feasibility study, which is expected to be completed this month.

The grant comes from the Welsh Assembly’s ‘Catching the Wave’ action plan, launched in 2004 to stimulate coastal economies in Wales. Catching The Wave is a water sports and leisure initiative that aims to increase annual revenue from water sports and leisure by 40% by 2010, taking the total contribution to the Welsh economy to £224m.

Hyder Consulting has begun assessing the existing site by carrying out ecological, land management and water surveys. The firm will then use these results to plan the development of a fully operational marina, considering several options for the basin.
