Czechs Fund New Elbe Shipping Channel

Sweden based construction group Skanska has won a contract to construct a shipping channel in the Czech Republic.
The contract value is SEK 586m, of which Skanska has a 52% share.
The customer is the Czech Republic Waterways Directorate and the project will be financed with a grant from the state infrastructure fund. The project involves the construction of a 3.2km long and 57m wide shipping channel on the Elbe River near he city of Prelouc. The scope of works also includes the construction of a ship lock and anti-flood bridges. The new channel will enable navigation along the river to the city of Pardubice, east of Prague.
The project is being conducted in a consortium with the Czech company OHL ZS, with works commencing this spring and scheduled for completion in June 2011.
Skanska Czech Republic is the largest construction company in the country, turning over some SEK 10bn in 2005.
