Survey Options for New Trinity House Vessel
15 Nov 2007
Described in greater detail elsewhere in this issue of Maritime Journal, Trinity House's new Polish built multi-function tender 'THV Galatea' is equipped with an impressive array of hydrographic equipment, enabling it to carry out detailed survey operations in addition to its other duties on behalf of the General Lighthouse Authority for England, Wales and the Channel Islands.
Officially named by The Queen on the River Thames last month in a ceremony presided over by the Duke of Edinburgh as Master of Trinity House, the 84m vessel's capabilities include real-time hydrographic operations covering bathymetry, sidescan sonar and wreck investigations. A combination of Differential GPS and positional orientation systems additionally ensures that it can also manoeuvre very precisely and lay buoys with an accuracy of around 2m in winds up to Force 6.
The vessel's survey equipment comprises Kongsberg Simrad EM 3002D multibeam and EA 400 38 single beam echosounders, a Simrad SEN sound velocity probe, a Kongsberg TD 304 buoy-based tide gauge system, a Simrad GeoAcoustics 159D dual-frequency sonar and for wreck finding, a Simrad SL 30-35 sonar. Offline post-processing and production of data is via a combination of Caris HIPS and SIPS and IVS 3D's Fledermus 3D visualisation software.
