New Crane Rail Installed at SCT
01 Oct 2007
A new crane rail has been installed at Southampton Container Terminals (SCT) to accommodate the two new post-panamax quayside gantry cranes which are due to be operational during the second quarter of 2008.
The initial phase of the works included the installation of a third crane rail on berths 205 and 206, which involved the quayside being piled and excavated, with a concrete beam cast to house the new crane rail. The work was completed the summer.
The new cranes will have an outreach of 22 container rows wide on the deck of a ship with a lift of 45m, which will enable SCT to service the new generation of very large container vessels.
As part of the procurement process and in conjunction with the supplier, Leibherr Cranes, SCT donated £50,000 to three local charities. Both Naomi House, a children’s hospice for the terminally ill based north of Winchester, and the Marine Society & Sea Cadets each received £20,000 and a donation of £10,000 was given to the Piam Brown Ward, a children’s cancer ward at the Southampton General Hospital.
