Jet Propelled at Europort Maritime
01 Oct 2007
Those visiting Europort Maritime 2007 will see that Hamilton waterjets have come a long way since Bill Hamilton designed and built his first axial flow waterjet in New Zealand back in 1956. Since then Hamilton Jet can take credit for over 30,000 installations and produces two Hamilton Jet ranges (the HM and HJ series) that are shipped to its 50 distribution points located all over the world. Hamilton Jet (UK) is responsible for UK and European distribution of Hamilton Jets, training, service and product support and supply of spare parts.
The HM Series spans from the HM461 (maximum skW 1,100) up to the largest model, the HM811 (maximum skW 3,500) and these waterjets are typically fitted in single up to quadruple installations. The biggest Hamilton waterjet propelled vessels so far produced in Europe are 55m and are propelled by quadruple 2,000 hp Cummins engines coupled to quad HM811s. As another example, 46m ferries (nine of them) in Lisbon are fitted with twin Hamilton HM811s. The smaller HJ Series waterjets span from the HJ212 model (260kw) to the HJ422 (maximum 1,000kw) and are widely specified for RIBs, rescue boats, work boats, fishing boats and leisure craft.
Hamilton Jet (UK) is exhibiting the HM521 waterjet on its Dutch Distributor AMW-MARINE’s stand (no.1408) at Europort this year. Also on show will be Hamilton Jet’s unique new ‘blue ARROW’ waterjet control simulator. This allows operators to learn how the new ‘mouseboat’ control system makes easy work of manoeuvring or mooring a Hamilton Jet powered boat in the tightest and trickiest situations. Hamilton Jet (UK) also has a simulator in a dedicated training room at its UK headquarters, and operators from all over Europe make use of this valuable facility.
Over the past few years, several prominent Dutch organisations have specified Hamilton Jets, so Europort visitors might catch sight of one in action on the nearby River Maas. The RWS (Rijkswaterstaat) went for Hamiltons on its 26m and 20m survey boats. The 20m version is fitted with twin HM521s (the model exhibited on AMW’s Europort stand). The ease with which a waterjet propelled boat is manoeuvred (at low and high speeds), coupled with its ability to operate in shallow water, makes it an obvious choice for a coastal survey vessel.
On the rescue boat front, the KNRM (Dutch Rescue Authority) specified twin Hamilton HM521 waterjets (coupled to twin MAN 735hp diesels) for its new 18.8m lifeboat RIBs, which have been developed from its well proven and successful Hamilton Jet propelled 14m rescue RIBs.
