ZF Gears Up In China

Less than one year after signing the joint venture contract was signed in Friedrichshafen last summer, the ZF Nanjing Marine Propulsion company in China has successfully tested its first transmission.

NGC produced its first marine gearbox less than a year after a joint venture contract established the company.

The new company has been established from scratch with a large assembly hall for building and testing gearboxes and a second hall for assembling controllable pitch propellers. All components are supplied by partner company, the Nanjing Highspeed & Accurate Gear (Group) Co. Ltd. (NGC), which also receives propeller blades and hub castings from ZF Faster Propulsion System in Zhuhai.

The process has not been an easy one, with many difficulties arising along the way. But problems have been solved as both parties worked together. The operation already has a significant intake of orders and thus a very high workload.

The first transmission is a model a ZF W33100 NR with three PTOs. Weighing some 6 tons, it is designed to transmit 5,000 hp on continuous duty. The rapid establishment of NGC owes much to the efforts of the partners in Japan and also at ZF Marine GmbH in Germany which is responsible for large transmission design and at ZF Padova in Italy, which is responsible for the commercial craft market.
