Sensor Packages for Seven New Dredgers

The Dutch specialist manufacturer of underwater equipment, Seatools, has signed a contract with Belgium’s Jan De Nul Group to supply the underwater sensors for monitoring the dredging process on board four hopper dredgers and three cutter suction dredgers currently under construction. The order is worth €500,000.

Dredger Delivers Vroom with a View

Italian dredger builder Italdraghe SpA delivered and launched a new, small SGT150C model cutter suction dredger for the beautiful coastal town of Casal Velino in Southern Italy in July. Casal Velino is within the protected Cilento National Park.

Dredging Restores Depth at Island Harbour

Jenkins Marine Ltd and Land & Water Services have been working together on a challenging project to dredge the Island Harbour Marina in the Isle of Wight. The works, which started in April, are due for completion by the end of this month, by which time some 23,000m3 of dredged material will have been removed and disposed of.

The 23m multipurpose research and survey vessel ‘MV FlatHolm’, owned by Coastline Surveys Ltd, has completed nearly three months continuous high performance vibrocore sampling in the Southern North Sea, English Channel and Bristol Channel for a variety of clients, and including works such as marine aggregates prospecting, windfarm geotechnical studies and port development environmental studies.

The Aberdeen Division of Denmark's Reson reports sales of SeaBat 8125 shallow water multibeam systems and associated equipment to PD Ports, Teesport and Peel Ports, which operates the ports of Mersey Docks & Harbour Company and Clydeport as well as the Manchester Ship Canal. This, the company says, follows earlier sales of similar systems to the ports of Barrow, Bristol, London and Tyne.

The Port of Tilbury UK is providing an ideal stopping off point for two river buses travelling from Brisbane, Australia, to their final destination on the River Thames.The vessels, built for the Thames Clippers fleet, arrived at Tilbury on board the Edmongracht, and were unloaded in a carefully planned tandem lift operation, from ship to quay, then quay to water.

Important Wind Farm Hurdle Overcome

A potential threat to what is described as the world’s largest wind farm off the north Kent Coast has been lifted following a Government ruling on the siting of the onshore substation. London Array Ltd, a company comprising Shell WindEnergy, E.ON and DONG Energy, is proposing to install up to 270 wind turbines in the Thames Estuary 12 miles off the Kent and Essex coasts. Once completed and fully operational it is expected that up to 1,000 MW of electricity will be produced, enough to satisfy the needs of all the homes in Kent and East Sussex.

P&O Ferries Boosts Freight Capacity

P&O Ferries has agreed to purchase a dedicated freight ferry in order to meet the growing demand for space from haulage customers throughout its operations.The company will take delivery of the ‘El Greco’, currently operated by the Spanish shipping line Trasmediterranea, during September and will deploy the vessel on its Dover-Calais service to offer additional peak time and refit season capacity in a growing market. The ship will also be used as a refit relief vessel in P&O's Irish Sea and North Sea operations.

Geoff Holt Conquers ‘Personal Everest’

Quadriplegic sailor Geoff Holt successfully completed his ‘Personal Everest’ quest to become the first disable person to sail around Great Britain on 5 September when his trimaran passed the South Cardinal buoy in Southampton Water 109 days after setting off. He had sailed 1,455 miles, stopped at 51 ports, and spent 58 days weather bound during one of the worst summers for weather in British history. He was accompanied throughout the journey by a fully crewed support RIB and additional team members following in three road vehicles, including his wife and five year old son.

Dubai World, which owns Dubai Ports World, which purchased P&O’s global ports operations last year, has now acquired the iconic ocean liner ‘Queen Elizabeth 2’ for $100m. The 40 year old, 70,000 ton cruise ship will be turned into a floating hotel alongside a pier at the Palm Jumeirah offshore development when it is retired from service in 2009.

Seabed Drilling for Chinese Port Upgrade

Qingdao Municipal Government in China is investing some $183m this year to upgrade Qingdao Port, which will have a massive container handling capacity of 12m TEU when 23 new deep water berths are built as a result of integrating Weihai Port. The Guangxi New Harbour Engineering Company has been hired to help build the berths by providing underwater drilling services. Their contract calls for more than 700,000 drill meters to be carried out, generally drilling 3m into the seabed to increase alongside depth to 15m. The seabed rock is predominantly hard granite and drilling is done with a 165 mm diameter drill bit and a 219 mm casing.

A new lifejacket has been launched by International Safety Products Ltd (ISP) of Merseyside UK to meet the needs of the Spanish fishing industry.
