Dredger Delivers Vroom with a View

Italian dredger builder Italdraghe SpA delivered and launched a new, small SGT150C model cutter suction dredger for the beautiful coastal town of Casal Velino in Southern Italy in July. Casal Velino is within the protected Cilento National Park.

Italdraghe succeeded in the competitive tender to supply the vessel by designing the dredger to be road transportable. It can be easily moved between dredging sites on a lorry and can be launched in small ports. Its compact dimensions allow the vessel to work in the tight spaces often encountered in small harbours.

The dredger is exceptionally manoeuvrable and is crewed by one on board operator who can continuously monitor all equipment and dredging functions thanks to a complete on board system of controls and indicators.

Casal Velino is situated 150 kilometres from Naples, where the Town Council will use the dredger for clearing and maintaining the tourist harbour located 170 metres down below the cliff top town.

The harbour of Casal Velino plays a key role in the town’s largely tourism based economy and the Town Council is well aware that, in order to keep a steady flow of pleasure boats and ferries coming into this small port, it has to ensure it remains fully navigable at all times.

In the past, the Town Council had to rely on outside contractors to dredge its frequently silted harbour. However, following the delivery of this dredger, it now enjoys complete freedom to independently carry out dredging activities when and where required.

The local authorities hope that as a direct result of the planned ongoing dredging work, the port of Casal Velino will be able to accommodate increasingly larger tourist ferries, leading in the long run to a greater number of visitors to this prime tourist resort.

The 12.45m LOA SGT150C features a beam of 3.57m and an average draft of only 0.75m. Powered by Iveco N67 MNT M28 marine diesels delivering 180 hp at 2,500 rpm, it will dredge to depths of 4.1m.
