    Another major milestone in the history of Kelvin Hughes Ltd. was achieved recently when the company celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of the installation of its first marine radar.   

  • Partners Rewarded

    Marinecall, the seafarers’ dedicated weather service, which provides UK Met Office data by phone, fax and internet, has started an Affiliate Partner scheme which is available to harbour authorities and any other organisation whose members or customers require sound met advice.  

  • ‘Passenger Pollution’

    ‘Passenger Pollution’ at some European destinations has led cruise ship operators to look for relatively ‘unknown’ ports where their vessels can call. Delegates to a cruise workshop held by the EU ports network project Port-Net were told of the opportunities for ports to exploit the burgeoning market, with Europe the fastest growing cruise destination in the world, if they can provide some excursion services for passengers.  

  • Along Dubai for QE2

    Dubai World, which owns Dubai Ports World, which purchased P&O’s global ports operations last year, has now acquired the iconic ocean liner ‘Queen Elizabeth 2’ for $100m. The 40 year old, 70,000 ton cruise ship will be turned into a floating hotel alongside a pier at the Palm Jumeirah offshore development when it is retired from service in 2009.   

  • €310m for EU Shortsea

    The UK’ Department for Transport has invited bids for a share of some €310m to be available across Europe up to 2012 from the European Union’s Motorways of the Sea programme. 

  • Wartsila Propped Up

    Finland based marine engine manufacturers Wartsila has acquired UK propeller repair company McCall Propellers Ltd, which employs 33 people and had a turnover of £6.4m last year.   

  • Ports Policy Due

    Following the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) conference in Spain recently, the UK’s Freight Transport Association (FTA) has called on the EU to focus its ports policy on the key issues for shippers of port congestion and transportation links.   

  • IHC

    The IHC Holland Merwede shipbuilding group has acquired Apeldoorn based Vremac Hydraulics BV. The 50 year old company designs and fabricates specialist hydraulic cylinders for suppliers of hydraulic systems for the dredging and offshore industries.   

  • Catch the Wind

    Two more events reflecting the growth of the marine renewable energy industry in Europe are now on the calendar. The 2007 European Offshore Wind Conference and Exhibition takes place in Berlin on 4-6 December. Further information at www.eow2007.info  

  • Coastal Port Agency

    Cory Brothers Shipping has been awarded a three year contract to provide agency services throughout the UK to coastal tanker operator James Fisher Everard, whose combined fleet will provide an anticipated additional 3,000 port calls per year. 

  • More Shortsea

    The growing freight market between the UK’s River Thames and the Continent was boosted last month by the introduction of a new dedicated ro-ro service between the Port of Tilbury and Zeebrugge in Belgium. 

  • Giant Boxship Docks at Hamburg

    At the beginning of September the new flagship of the Chinese shipping company COSCO Container Lines Ltd docked at the Port of Hamburg for the first time. The 'Cosco Asia', with its slot capacity of 10,062 TEU, is the largest container ship to have entered the Port of Hamburg to date.
