'Fair Maid' Delivers On Eastern Promise
24 Jan 2008
The vessels will be based on the 13m tug under construction for Peterhead Port Authority. Unlike the Peterhead vessel, which will be fitted with the Mampaey DOT system, these newest order tugs will be fitted with conventional aft towing hooks. With a length overall of 13m, breadth of 5.4m and moulded depth of 2.8m, the vessels will carry 4,500 litres of fuel and 200 litres of FW.
They will be fitted with twin Volvo D12 main engines rated 450 bhp at 1,800 rpm and driving 1,600mm diameter propellers in fixed nozzles through 5.95:1 reduction gearboxes. The estimated bollard pull will be in the region of 13 tons. Manoeuvrability will be enhanced by twin high performance aerofoil rudders and a hydraulic bow thruster giving 320 kg of thrust. The large wheelhouse will accommodate two crew and two passengers. Excellent all round vision is provided by deep windows and eyebrow windows.
The spacious engine room allows for clear access to all of the machinery and there is also a workshop/WC compartment forward of the engine room.
The heavy duty displacement hull is well protected with 200mm by 200mm 'D' section rubber fendering all round, especially on the bow for pusher duties. A large clear deck space aft can be used for general workboat duties and even plough dredging in the future as these vessels' forerunner, the 'Fair Maid' has proved to be an extremely adaptable vessel in performing various harbour tasks, including plough dredging.
Fair Maid was the first harbour tug designed by Macduff Ship Design and entered service last year in Perth harbour. The vessel has been a catalyst for creating considerable interest in Macduff designs amongst workboat operators and this first export order to Malaysia is one of the early outcomes. Enquiries have also been received from Turkey and Romania in addition to the UK.
