    Dutch dredging and marine contractor Van Oord has been awarded a contract to lay a 150kV cable between Ellewoutsdijk and Terneuzen in its home country. 

  • Dredging and Reclamation Begins at Khalifa Port

    Abu Dhabi Ports Company reports that dredging and reclamation work at Khalifa Pot has begun. The work involves 45m cu/m of material. 

  • Sea Defence Projects Awarded to CLI

    Concrete Layer Innovations (CLI) in France reports that so far this year a total of seven new projects have been specified with ACCROPODE or CORE-LOC armoured units ordered from CLI’s assigned areas for projects in Europe, the Middle East, the Caribbean and South America. 

  • TTS Delivers Rothesay Linkspan

    Delta Marine Consultants has granted Brazilian Contractor Norberto Odebrecht SA a licence for the application of Xbloc armour units for the construction of the shore protection scheme at the Cinta Costera boulevard in Panama City, Panama. 

  • Great Yarmouth Outer Harbour Progressing Well

    The developers for the new Outer Harbour at Great Yarmouth in the UK say construction is progressing well on the new north breakwater, with approximately 550m completed.

  • Oban Trial Demonstrates Galileo Navigation

    The Northern Lighthouse Board, the General Lighthouse Authority for Scotland and the Isle of Man, welcomed guests and members of the European MARUSE Consortium to its base in Oban last month to view a high tech demonstration aimed at developing an understanding of the maritime uses of Galileo for navigation. 

  • Crane Ship Finally Delivers the Goods

    The heavy lift crane carrier Zhen Hua 23, which broke away from its moorings at Felixstowe on 1 March, was finally moved to the Trinity Container Terminal number 7 berth some three weeks after the accident which destroyed two of the port’s quayside container cranes. 

  • Dutch Dredgers in Profits Bonanza

    The Netherlands' two major international dredging contractors have reported spectacular rises in profits and turnover during 2007. Royal Boskalis Westminster realised a net profit of €204.4m.

  • Amos Saved from a Watery Grave

    After 32 years lying on the Medway next to Chatham Historic Dockyard, the UK’s last surviving steam paddle tug, 'John H Amos', has been moved to a more suitable location for work on the vessel’s restoration.

    Ferry operator Wightlink has launched the first of three new ferries at the Brodogradiliste Kraljevica yard in Croatia, where all three of the vessels are being built. 

  • Pirates Seize Yacht

    Pirates took the crew of a luxury French yacht hostage on Friday 4 April. The 850-ton three-mast yacht the Ponant (operated by Marseille-based CMA-CGM) had 30 crew but no passengers when it was boarded by pirates in the Gulf of Aden, between Somalia and Yemen.

    More than 190 participants at the 5th annual Green Ship Technology conference in Rotterdam last month explored the latest tide of ‘stick and carrot’ options for making shipping environmentally sustainable. Eco-friendly solutions aired at the forum ranged from legislative compulsion to commercially beneficial inducements.

  • EPA Announces Final Marine Engine Rule

    In America, the Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) responded to the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) announcement last month that the agency has finalised new emission standards for marine engines and locomotives by indicating that engine manufacturers are ready to tackle the challenges ahead. 

  • Quad Power for Fast Crew Supplier

    The Netherlands' Damen Shipyards Group introduced their Fast Crew Supplier 5009 last year and five of the innovative workboats have already been sold, each powered by four Caterpillar 3512B marine engines. 

  • Outboard Power for New Rescue RIB

    Following reliability problems with their ageing inboard diesel jet driven RIB, Ryde Inshore Rescue service on the Isle of Wight UK decided to invest in a new boat and engine package. 

  • Sightseeing Power on the Cape d'Agde

    Two new 12m purpose built sightseeing boats operated by Les Coches D'eau on the Cape d'Agde, a few kilometres from Montpelier in the south of France, have each been fitted with a pair of Perkins Sabre M92B engines. 

  • Low Emissions for High Capacity Ro-Ros

    Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA (WW) and Wallenius Lines (OW) have signed an agreement with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) to build a new generation of four ro-ro carriers that will be the world’s largest. The vessels are scheduled to be built in Japan at Mitsubishi’s Nagasaki yard, with the delivery dates due in 2011 and 2012. 

  • Waterjets Wanted for Windfarm Workboats

    Ultra Dynamics, manufacturer of the UltraJet range, report that waterjets are currently the first choice of propulsion for wind farm workboats due to the enhanced manoeuvrability they provide and the ability to hold station while work is being carried out: the latter being a key requirement when servicing offshore wind farms especially in very rough sea conditions. 

  • Clean Design Engine Production Skyrockets

    Some 40% of the Rolls-Royce offshore vessel engines sold last year met the classification society Clean Design requirements, compared to 5% just two years ago. All the engines exceed the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) standards for NOx emissions by 20%.

    The Ukrainian anchor handling tug Neftegaz 67 capsized and sank on 23 March after colliding with after colliding with the panamax bulk carrier, Yao Hai, in Hong Kong waters.

    A new tug Chambon Suroit is now on station in Calais to reinforce the local tug fleet. 

  • The Tug 'North' – a New Kid on the Block

    Sharp eyed readers will have become aware of the new tug North carrying out coastal and short sea towage operations around Western Europe. Built in Malaysia in 2007, the twin screw tug is operated by Rotterdam based Avra Towage BV under the Dutch Antilles flag. 

  • New Vessels for Crowley in Alaska

    Crowley Maritime Corporation has taken delivery of the Vigilant, a new stern drive tug on charter from BayDelta Maritime, for use in their ship assist and escort business in Alaska. 

  • Damen Tug and Workboat Range Makeover Continues

    The Tug & Workboats design team at Damen Shipyards Gorinchem is continuing the painstaking task of updating the well known ‘Stan Tug’ tug and workboat range of standard products. Having dealt with most of the large vessels, the team has turned its attention to the well known Pushycat design. 

  • Sanmar Supply Three Ulupinar Series Tugs to Dominica

    The first of three ‘Ulupinar’ series ASD tugs, ordered by Remolcadores Dominicanos of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, has now been delivered. 

  • Bugsier take delivery of their first Rotor Tug

    It was reported in March that the first ‘rotor tug’ for German tug owners Bugsier Reederei und Bergungs-Gesellschaft mbH & Co was on route to Europe aboard a heavy lift ship. Bugsier 6 was taken over by Bugsier in Singapore after completion by the ASL Shipyard Pte.

  • Gift Presentation Marks LOF Century

    Arnold Witte, president of the International Salvage Union presented Lord Peter Levene, chairman of Lloyd’s with a gift from the salvage industry to mark the centenary of Lloyd’s Form, the world’s most frequently used form of marine salvage agreement. 

  • Successful Salvage from French Coast

    Abeilles International has carried out a successful assistance operation which started on 10 March after the freighter Artemis was driven aground on the beach of Sables d'Olonne in Southern Brittany by winds of 130km per hour. 

  • Fairmount’s Armada Spanning the Globe

    With their fleet of Fairmount class tugs at full strength for some time, the order book of Rotterdam based Fairmount Marine BV is bulging. All five of the company's long distance anchor handling salvage tugs are equipped with four engines, producing a total of 16,320bhp for a bollard pull of 200 tons.  

  • New Towage Company Makes Its Mark

    The new company Sedna Towage & Offshore LDA based in Funchal, Madeira is growing rapidly thanks to the efforts of their Italian attorney Mr Rino Barretta, managing director of An.do.fe Shipping Management Srl. Within just a few months a new fleet has been created, starting with the 55 tons bollard pull anchor-handling tug Scapino

  • Two Very Different Tugs for Dutch Owners

    All tug owners, especially those with many years of operational experience, have a highly developed insight into the requirements each new vessel must have to fulfil the needs of their own individual business. The two latest completions by Shipyard Gebr Kooiman BV of Zwijndrecht in the Netherlands over the past few of months illustrate this point.

  • Hexagonal Cofferdam Meets Spudcan Challenge

    UMC International recently took up the challenge to create a dry working environment around the giant support feet (spudcans) of a jack-up oil rig so that repairs could be undertaken on the top surfaces of each foot. 

  • Mobile Dry Dock Called to South Korea

    While still under warranty, a three-month old, 260m long container ship developed a worrying oil leak from its stern tube seal. Antwerp based underwater repair specialist Hydrex was called all the way to Pusan, South Korea, flying in all the equipment needed for the job, including a seal specialist engineer from Aegir-Marine and the Hydrex mobile drydock.

    Germany’s Meidericher Schiffswerft (MSW) in Duisburg, still going strong after 110 years in the business, has completed the latest in a series of complex small vessel re-engine projects. 

  • Plating Repair Provides Impact Protection

    Dutch dredging contractor Van Oord chose SPS Overlay to provide side shell protection for its trailing suction hopper dredger Volvox Iberia. The work was carried out in Ajman at a yard which is jointly owned by Keppel, an SPS Overlay licensee.
