The total length of the shore protection scheme will be 3km. A total of 30,000 of the 0.75 cu/m Xblocs will be used as the main armour layer for the project.
The construction of the Cinta Costera project will be executed over the course of the next 18 months, and is the largest application of Xblocs worldwide so far, and the second project in the Americas.
The project will see the existing boulevard, Avenida Balboa, which is located in the bay next to the entrance of the Panama Canal, extended seawards. In addition to the shore protection project, a new boulevard including several parks will be developed behind it.
Delta Marine Consultants (DMC) has also recently granted Van Oord in The Netherlands a licence for the application of Xbloc armour units for the construction of a breakwater in Champerico, Guatemala.
The breakwater at Champerico will have a length of 500m and main armour consisting of 4m3 Xblocs. Steel Xbloc moulds for the production of the Xblocs has been fabricated by BAM, and are being shipped to Guatemala, where they will be assembled.
