  • CZ Buoyed by Trinity House Order

    Cookson & Zinn (CZ), the specialist tank and vessel manufacturers, have supplied 24 new buoys for a range of locations around the English and Welsh coast for Trinity House. 

  • New AIS Pinpoints Irish Sea Navaids

    An innovative scheme funded by the European Union's Interreg IIIA programme to increase safety on the seas was launched last month in Larne, Northern Ireland. The Automatic Identification System will improve navigation capabilities for ships by automatically identifying other ships in the area, as well as buoys and lighthouses.

  • Work on Track for Unique German SWATH Boats

    Construction is underway at Nordseewerke (NSW) in Emden of two more unique German SWATH vessels. They are not the first of their kind from the yard but are the first ever for service with the German Customs.

    A total of 26 Kongsberg Maritime Neptune Engine Room Simulators (ERS) and Cargo Handling Simulators (CHS) have received a new Det Norske Veritas (DNV) Statement of Compliance this year according to new standards laid out in DNV Class A, Standard for Certification of Maritime Simulators No. 2.14 October 2007, which is based on the requirements of STCW Convention, Regulation I/12.

  • World's Most Mature Cadet Qualifies

    With the training and retention of mariners a continuing issue for the shipping community, it comes as good news that ex-fireman cadet Peter Sommerfield has recently qualified in the UK as a certificated watchkeeping officer at the age of 45 years. He has completed his cadetship and qualified for his STCW II/I certificate.

     

  • MCA Gets New SAR Helicopters

    New helicopters introduced to provide search and rescue (SAR) services from two bases in the north of Scotland are now established in the role. The new Sikorsky S92 aircraft have been introduced on a phased basis at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) bases at Stornoway and Sumburgh, Shetland.

  • Fisheries Research Vessel Sets New Standards

    Macduff Shipyards Limited have recently completed their most prestigious order to date with the handing over of the Fisheries Research Vessel (FRV) 'Alba Na Mara'. The 27m steel vessel was built for the Fisheries Research Services, an agency of the Scottish Executive, to replace FRV "Clupea".
