IMCA Guidelines for Graduate Surveyors

Concerned that graduates from survey courses recruited into the offshore industry do not necessarily have the requisite levels of knowledge to begin a successful career, the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has published a set of guidelines aimed at assisting colleges and universities in focusing on customer requirements when revising existing courses or developing new ones.

Knowledge attained by students on different courses can vary considerably, according to IMCA, a number of whose Offshore Survey Division member companies have been obliged to provide newly qualified surveyors with additional levels of introductory training covering basic skills.

The organisation, which represents over 430 offshore marine companies in 50 countries, nonetheless recognises that access to specialised knowledge and equipment can be difficult for colleges and universities and it is therefore willing to consider requests for assistance.

In the meantime, it has published Academic Requirements for Surveyors Working in the Offshore Survey Sector, a set of international guidelines listing requirements under 16 headings. Subjects covered include Health, Safety and the Environment, Geodesy, Geophysics, Hydrography, Oceanography, Mathematics, Survey Computations, Surface Positioning Systems, Acoustics, Engineering Surveys, Data Management & Presentation, IT Skills, Technical Report Writing, and Project Management.

IMCA members can download the publication (IMCA S 005) free of charge from the members only website or order printed versions for £2.50 per copy. Non-member copies can be obtained for £5  either by downloading online at www.imca-int.com/publications or by post from IMCA, 5 Lower Belgrave Street, London SW1W 0NR Tel: 020 7824 5520 Fax: 020 7824 5521 Email: publications@imca-int.com.
