  • Deep dive wing development rewarded

    One of the problems in towing an instrument underwater is the long length of cable required to get the device down to depth. JW Fishers have developed a universal wing called the DDW-1 Deep Dive Wing to help overcome this problem. 

  • UMC awarded enabling contract for MoD

    Underwater repair and maintenance specialists UMC International have been awarded an enabling contract with the Salvage & Marine Operations IPT/DCS for the provision of diving and ROV underwater survey services for the UK coastal and inland waters. 

  • Underwater Technology Convention launches in Hamburg

    The first Underwater Technology Convention held in Hamburg last month was well attended and placed the emphasis firmly on the key procedures of 'Joining and Cutting',  key procedures for the maintenance of technical underwater installations and indispensable for harbour construction, hydraulic engineering, flood defence and ship operation as well as offshore installations and pipelines.

  • Sonardyne acquires Waterfront Systems

    Subsea equipment specialists Sonardyne have acquired Wavefront Systems Ltd of Sherborne, Dorset, a design company similarly specialising in sonar and underwater technology on behalf of commercial and military clients. 

  • Fugro orders new vessel

    Dutch survey conglomerate Fugro has commissioned Fr. Fassmer of Berne-Motzen near Bremen in north Germany to design and construct a new 65m geophysical survey vessel, Fugro Searcher

  • Reson extends multibeam range

    Reson has extended its SeaBat series of multibeam sounders with the introduction of a small, lightweight model for mounting on underwater vehicles or boats of opportunity, the SeaBat 7101. 

  • UKHO launches new vector chart service

    The UK Hydrographic Office has launched its new Admiralty Vector Chart Service (AVCS) which, it says, will provide an integrated global set of electronic navigational charts designed for the 21st century mariner. 

  • Sonar imaging for small subsea vehicles

    Subsea visualisation specialist SRD has introduced Eclipse, a new sonar imaging system with 3-dimensional measurement capability.

  • Broads Forum welcomes coast defence commitment

    The Broads Forum has welcomed a commitment by the Environment Agency in the UK to continue to maintain the defences of The Norfolk Broads for at least the next 50 years. 

  • DHV in The Netherlands has been commissioned to carry out the Caofeidian coastal development project in China.

    The Dutch engineering consultancy DHV has been commissioned, together with the Chinese planning institute Qinghua and the Arup consultancy from the UK, to carry out a prestigious coastal and urban development project in China. 

  • Jan de Nul awarded €1bn in contracts

    Belgium's Jan De Nul Group has recently been awarded several contracts around the world which together are worth in excess of €1bn. The projects will be executed in markets such as Peru, Trinidad and Brazil. 

  • Dredging International a key partner in Coentunnel project

    The Rijkswaterstaat, part of the Dutch Ministry of Transportation and Water Management, and Coentunnel Company BV in the Netherlands have signed a contract for the Capacity Expansion Coentunnel Route, a project which also involves Dredging International as a key partner. 

  • Evelop and Van Oord to build offshore windfarms

    Evelop, part of the sustainable energy company Econcern, has signed a contract with Dutch dredging and marine contractor Van Oord that will see the companies build four offshore windfarms in Western Europe. 

  • Dredging International confirms Panama Canal contract

    Dredging International of Belgium has confirmed that it has been awarded the contract to widen and deepen the Panama Canal. Notification of the contract was given by the Audoridad del Canal de Panamá (ACP), and will secure work for the next four years. 

  • TTS revamps Stena linkspans

    TTS has carried out a major upgrade project to extend the life of access ramps serving a Stena Line route. 

  • Dredging gets underway at Port of Lerwick

    Work was due to begin last month on the largest single capital project yet at Lerwick Harbour, providing improved vessel access, deeper berths and new opportunities through land reclamation for future development.

  • SeaGen successfully installed in Northern Ireland

    Pioneering renewable energy developer Marine Current Turbines successfully completed the first installation phase of the 1.2MW SeaGen Tidal System into the fast flowing waters of Strangford Narrows of Northern Ireland last month. It is the world's first commercial scale tidal energy turbine. 

  • REDS dive into New Year with renewables

    Rugby UK based Reach Engineering & Diving Services (REDS) has started off the New Year as they finished 2007, winning a contract for a diving project on N-Power's Rhyl Flats Wind Farm, off the North Wales coast. 

  • Lunar lands largest tidal power deal

    Further evidence that UK renewable energy developers are far ahead of their government comes with news that tidal power company Lunar Energy has signed an agreement with Korean Midland Power Co which will create a giant 300 turbine field in the Wando Hoenggan Water Way off the South Korean coast.

  • 'Riverdance' wreck will be dismantled on site

    Work has started on the task of dismantling the wreck of the ferry 'Riverdance', now lying on the beach at Blackpool on the north-west coast of England. After a lengthy evaluation process, the owner of Riverdance produced plans to dismantle the ship in situ on the grounds that it represents the best option available in the interests of safety and protecting the environment. 

  • 'Earthrace' away on biofuel record attempt

    Earthrace, a 78' wave piercing trimaran powerboat that runs as a carbon neutral project exclusively on 100% biodiesel started an attempt to break the round the world speed record late last month. 

  • Wave power follows in wake of wind

    A new wave power station on the Isle of Lewis, one of the first in the world, moved a step closer last month as npower renewables submitted a planning application for the ground-breaking scheme. 

  • Chichester Working Boats Festival a success

    Twenty colourful working boats lined the jetty at Itchenor for the Harbour Working Boats Festival last month to give the public a valuable insight into life onboard working vessels in Chichester Harbour. 

  • 'Napoli' design defects identified by MAIB

    Design defects which led to catastrophic hull failure of the containership 'MSC Napoli' when it encountered heavy seas in the English Channel last year have been identified in 12 other ships. 

  • Record breaking year for Dutch vessel builder

    Dutch specialist vessel builder IHC Merwede had another record breaking year in 2007, with profits doubling to €65m, a 50% increase in revenue to €774m and an order book which doubled to some €1.5bn.

  • ISU calls for new Lloyds Form

    International Salvage Union (ISU) president Arnold Witte has called on all sectors of the shipping and insurance industries to approach the issue of salvage and spill prevention with 'fresh thinking and open minds'.

  • Cardiff Bay Gets a Coastline

    Following a competitive tendering exercise UK based Coastline Surveys Limited have been awarded a two year survey contract to undertake monthly surveys of the Cardiff Bay, the Barrage, Inner and Outer Harbours and Approaches and parts of the Rivers Taff and Ely. The waters are managed by Cardiff Harbour Authority as part of Cardiff Council. 

  • Long distance dredging makes marina work

    A new development at the UK's Plymouth Marina has involved the construction of a boat launching facility to move craft directly from the storage yard into the estuary below. 

  • Work underway on Hamburg Port bridge

    Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) has begun construction works for a new bridge over the Rethe canal. 

  • Environmental oil bridging the gaps

    The ABP Port of Southampton has recently installed new ship to shore walkways at the Port’s City Cruise Terminal. 

  • Singapore success for Seawork exhibitor

  • Fast patrol boats for Trinidad and Tobago

    Australian vessel builder Austal has won the contract to build six 30m aluminium fast patrol craft for the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. 

  • Goodchild launches new multi-role workboat

    Norfolk UK based Goodchild Marine has launched the all new Aqua Bell Trojan 33 semi displacement workboat, which is designed to operate in arduous offshore conditions. 

  • Safehaven intercepts pilot boat orders

    Following an international tender in 2007, Ireland's Safehaven Marine, builders of the Interceptor range of pilot boats have been awarded the contract to supply an all weather pilot boat to the port of Sines in Portugal. 

  • Briggs buys a triple hull Meercat

    Southampton UK based Meercat Workboats Ltd has received an order from  Scotland based contractors Briggs Marine Ltd for a 15.5m Meercat. The latest version is based on the previous twin hulled, road transportable vessels but is being supplied with a third hull.

  • ITC fleet continue to expand in 35th Anniversary year

    Dutch towage contractor ITC celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2008 and can now report substantial expansion in its fleet and business. A couple of years ago the company, which had previously concentrated almost exclusively on long distance towage and salvage, decided to move into the offshore sector.
