More than 200 Daewoo engines have gone into service with commercial vessels around UK and Irish waters since their introduction in 1998 and are building a reputation for fuel efficiency and reliability.
W Harvey and Sons of Newlyn have two Daewoos in their fleet which have clocked up more than 15,000 hours without problems.
Daewoo marine engine sales have been booming since the start of this year, with newbuild placements including two twin screw workboats from Morrison Engineering, one for Glendale Salmon of Dunbegan and the other for Solt Seafoods of the Island of Harris. Other newbuilds receiving Daewoos include a twin screw dredger for Portling Fisheries of Dalbeatie, a Kingfisher 33 and a Kingfisher 26 from Seaway Marine in Macduff, and a Cygnus GM33.
A significant number of Daewoos have been used in repowers, including that of an 85ft Thames fuel barge and a twin screw multi-purpose workbarge for Briggs Marine Contractors.
Heavy duty Dong-I gearboxes from Korea are fitted to more than 60% of Daewoo marine engines and have also been fitted to Cummins, Ford, Gardner, Iveco and Perkins engines.
