New Tug and Workboat Range from MAN B&W
01 Apr 2002
MAN B&W has followed up last year's introduction of the L21/31 series of genset engines with a new marine propulsion generation of the medium speed engines in power outputs ranging from 1,200 to 1,900kW. The propulsion engine is largely based on the same engine components but with a different power layout and a propulsion optimised front end and aft end design.
Boxes at both ends of the engine are purpose designed. The aft end box carries the charge air cooler element and also acts as a console for the turbocharger, which is positioned low and matched to reduction gearbox overhang to facilitate the shortest possible engine room installations.
The front end box features maintenance-friendly plug-out/ plug-in actions, all lube oil equipment arranged in a safe closed circuit and an automatic full-flow lube oil filter. There is an integrated support bearing for an optional 100% front end PTO.
The L21/31 design will target coastal vessels, fishing boats and small cargo and passenger ships.
The performance characteristics of the 1,000 rpm engines will also appeal in the tug and workboat sectors, where they have the capability to power a variety of thrusters and propulsors.
With the MAN B&W Alpha concept, the engine will be supplied as an integrated part of a propulsion package which also includes an in-house designed and tailored reduction gearbox, CP propeller and control, monitoring and safety systems.
The integrated package concept can reduce a shipyard's handling and installation costs by a claimed 10%.
The supply of the complete package will be available for customer delivery by the autumn of 2003. Engines alone will be available from the middle of 2003.
