Scania Gensets Light Up 'St Clare'

Four Scania engines are supplying all on-board power for the 'St Clare', the newest ferry to join WIGHTlink's fleet of vessels plying the Portsmouth to Fishbourne route.

The St Clare will boost capacity well beyond the 1.11 million cars WIGHTlink took across the Solent in 2000.

Built at the Remontowa shipyard in Gdansk, Poland to a design by naval architects Hart Fenton, the £11.5 million St Clare has a capacity for 180 cars and 750 passengers. At 86m long and with a breadth of 18m, it is 8m longer and 1m wider than all existing Saint class vessels on the Portsmouth to Isle of Wight route. There are separate side loading facilities for foot passengers at the passenger deck level while the vessel's double end design allows vehicles to load faster onto two car decks at one end and disembark at the other end.

Built to Lloyds A1 specification in accordance with MCA regulations, the St Clare is powered by four medium speed diesel engines driving Voith Schneider units. Four Scania powered gensets provide all on board power for the vessel.

The D9 diesel units are rated 156 kW at 1,500 rpm. Three units supply prime power for lighting, heating, air-conditioning, winches and all other on board electrical requirements, while the fourth unit is a back-up in case of breakdown.
