New Diving Operations Vessel Honours Lost Colleague
01 Apr 2002
A new, extended version of the Portland 10 Workboat developed specifically to be a diving boat went into service last month with Dorset UK based 2good2btrue Charters.
The Portland 38 (11.5m) is the third Portland Workboat to be built by Clark's Boatworks of Portland in Dorset and the first to be driven by waterjets.
Primarily designed for safe diving operations, the vessel will also meet the demands of sports fishermen keen to reach distant grounds in quick time.
The vessel achieved speeds of over 35 knots during recent trials.
The vessel is built by Clark's Boatworks using an almost traditional cedar wood core construction which is then completely encapsulated by an exceptionally strong epoxy resin system using knitted quadraxial glass fibres.
The extensive build technique produces immense strength from a lightweight hull which cruises economically above 20 knots.
Power is by two conventional Volvo TAMD63Ls commercially rated at 320hp and connected to a much less conventional Volvo Twin Jet propulsion unit designed jointly with Kamewa.
The jet system provides safe operating conditions for submerged divers as there are no exposed rudders or propellers.
This Portland 38 has six berths, a separate galley and two shower/toilet compartments.
Furuno Nav-Net electronics are installed, the integrated system including a flux-gate compass, sounder, radar and plotter, all displayed on a single daylight readable LCD colour screen.
The vessel is licensed for 12 passengers and two crew under MCA Category 2 Brown/ Yellow COP of 60 miles.
The vessel's name, One for his Nob, honours owner Keith Morley's friend and colleague Richard 'Nobby' Clark, who was involved in every aspect of designing and building the Portland Workboat range and sadly died before this vessel was commissioned.
