Dredger Protection Prioritised
01 Apr 2002
Dredgers are hardworking vessels, prone to extreme mechanical wear and tear inherent to the nature of their enterprise. However, dredger operators are keen that their vessels should appear in first class condition at all times.
Addressing the disparity between presentational pride and the harsh working environment has provided a challenge for Jotun Paints, whose products have provided protective coatings for a number of British dredgers recently.
The Bristol Port Company's dredger Malingo has received an application of Seaguardian tin-free antifouling to its hull, a product which performs well at slow speeds in coastal waters.
A reinforced alkyd based system, Pilot I and Pilot 2 has been used elsewhere on both the exterior and interior of the vessel. Because it is tintable, Pilot II can be used to maintain corporate colour schemes.
The dredgers of Associated British Ports' affiliate UK Dredging have also been treated with Jotun paints. All their vessels are coated in Seaguardian antifouling, while products used for other areas include the vinyl/alkyd system Seahorse, and the quick drying non-tar modified vinyl primer Vinyguard Silvergray 88, followed by Pilot I and Pilot II.
The UKD Marlin and UKD Dolphin are protected with Prismatic Universal epoxy mastic followed by Vinyguard vinyl tar overcoated with Pioneer Topcoat, an acrylic based topcoat.
Cathodic protection has also been provided for these dredgers.
