Millbank Millennium Pier will be sited near Millbank Tower and Tate Britain and is due to open in Autumn 2002. It is being funded by Transport for London (TfL), the Millennium Commission, the City of Westminster, Tishman Speyer, the Cross River partnership and Tate.

When completed, the pier will be managed by London River Services, which is the section of TfL responsible for implementing the Mayor's Transport Strategy on the River Thames. It is anticipated that the new pier will be served by boats providing services to central London piers including Bankside, so facilitating a river transport link between the two Tate galleries.

The pier has been designed by marine engineers Beckett Rankine Partnership and Mark Barfield Architects, designers of the BA London Eye. The design combines modern architecture with good passenger access and facilities, providing a 30m berthing face for river boats.

The design includes collaboration with artist Angela Bullock on an innovative lighting scheme.
