America Opens Door to Foreign Suppliers

A new report by the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) has warned the UK maritime supply industries to prepare to bid over the next few months for major American contracts.

The report, which is available to all SMI members, highlights the UK export opportunities resulting from the US Deepwater Project, which aims to modernise US Coast Guard and Navy vessels. Project Deepwater has a $500 million per annum acquisition budget and a further $900 million to spend on maintenance over 40 years.

Contracts to be won are for integrated electronic systems, high-power electronics, mechanical support systems, and weaponry for patrol vessels.

Crucially, the usual 'made in America' clauses have been lifted, creating a major opportunity for overseas manufacturers to penetrate lucrative US markets.

The SMI is taking a pro-active approach to help its members gain useful contacts. An SMI delegation attended the Workboat 2001 exhibition in New Orleans late last year, forging contacts with six large shipyards and distributing both the SMI Directory and the British Marine Equipment Supplier's CD-Rom to potential new customers.
