Seawork2002 Update

Debut for Eco-Friendly Workboat

With the environmental impact of commercial port operations the major theme of this year's seawork Forum, it is timely that one of the seawork Exhibition's new participants will be showing a new eco-friendly workboat and also offering diesel-electric propulsion systems.

The Thames Electric Launch Company (TELCO) has just become UK agent for the Dutchbuilt Interboat range of fibreglass hull workboats/harbour launches which can be had with either diesel power or battery pack electric propulsion. A diesel powered Interboat 19 will participate in seawork's floating exhibition but the same vessel is also available in electric propulsion form for applications such as fish farming or inland waterway use where environmental considerations are paramount. The electric powered boat achieves the same operating speed as its diesel sibling and its battery pack provides up to 10 hours running time between charges.

TELCO will also have a stand at seawork's indoor exhibition where visitors can learn more about the Selectric diesel-electric propulsion system which can be supplied for newbuilds or retrofitted to any boat up to approximately 60' which already has a diesel engine. Selectric consists of a separate electric motor and diesel engine driving a common propeller shaft.

Systems have already been sold to the Environment Agency and British Waterways for use in environmentally sensitive inland waterways. Silent patrolling and a higher level of crew comfort are among the additional benefits of diesel-electric systems, with the diesel option always in reserve for emergency use such as towing or for extended patrols.
