Hagglunds Drives High Powered Towing Winches

The Engineering Business Ltd has developed a new generation of tow winches for the latest Sea Stallion cable ploughs using Hagglunds hydraulic motors and brakes. These cable ploughs are burying submarine cables up to 3m below the seabed.

Two new 130 tonne pull force tow winches have recently undergone sea trials in Korea on new cable vessels for ALDA, a joint venture between Alcatel and Louis Dreyfus Armatures.

A third winch will follow shortly.

Each winch is fitted with four compact motors from Hagglunds, complete with two-speed valves and multi-disc brakes power sharing the dynamic loads involved. The result is precise and safe control even at maximum loading and allows the winch to be certified for operation in Sea State 7.

At full rendering speed the hydraulic flow exceeds 5,000 lpm, with impressive performance figures including a maximum load holding of 130 tonnes, render at 90m/min, maximum pull in speed of 40m/min, and maximum pay out speed of 60m/min.

Safety was a prime design consideration and the winch will continue to render for up to a minute in the event of a ship blackout. The control system allows the winch to be operated in three different modes; lift and lower, render for ploughing operations, and constant tenion for safe handling of the plough at the seabed or on the surface.
