'Neptune' is King of the Ropes

The winner of Cosalt's competition to find a product name for its latest heavy duty polysteel potting rope is Devon skipper Alan Steer who came up with the name Neptune.

Cosalt received over 100 entries for the competition, which was launched at the Fishing 2002 show in Glasgow earlier this year.

The new rope, which was designed to complement Cosalt's existing range of pot ropes for the lobster and crab fisheries, has been specifically developed for fisherman working in extremely rough ground and is ideal for use as a back line where the seabed is rocky or subject to high currents.

Skipper Alan Steer said he thought of the name while having a cup of coffee with his father, skipper Winkie Steer. "The name conjures up something strong and trustworthy that thrives underwater. I jotted the word down, ent it off to Cosalt and didn't think anything more of it. I was very surprised to have won."

Alan was presented with his prize of three coils of 14mm leaded Neptune by Tracie Bentley, assistant branch manager at Cosalt's Saltash branch.

Neptune is a high tenacity polypropylene rope that is highly resistant to abrasion. Its special shorter rope lay means the rope is good at resisting the ingress of sand and other particles. The tight lay also results in a generous weight to diameter ration.
