Associated British Ports has invested in the latest radar systems and technology, purchasing four new radar scanners to double the port's radar capacity while also installing closed circuit television and bespoke computer management programmes.

The Princess Royal had inaugurated the same facility 13 years ago. She was shown around the operations centre by Ross Sayers, Chairman of ABP Holdings Plc, ABP Group Chief Executive Bo Lerenius, and Captain James Chestnutt, Harbour Master of the Port of Southampton. She watched the workings of a watch team which co-ordinates over 100,000 vessel movements yearly, providing pan-Solent coverage for both the statutory harbour authority districts of Southampton and Portsmouth. .
